Stay On top Of Your Social Networking Sites….
I finally decided to update my Facebook Timeline Fanpage by creating some new photo images and getting familiarize with the new features. I’m guilty I waited till the end. But I got it done. I prefer the old version, but it’s not like we as users have an option. I don’t think I am alone out there, I see a lot of profiles and fanpages sitting on the old style pages and if they switched over to the new Timeline version they are not utilizing the image features at all.
Maybe most folks are unfamiliar how to use the new timeline version or skeptical what images to add. So later in my post I will briefly touch on how to add an image to your cover photo, profile picture thumbnail and the Icon Apps image to make your page stand out.
Create A Brand With Your Layout Timeline
With the new Timeline layout, a photo image maybe everything to brand who you are or what you’re representing. I won’t profess to be a professional graphic designer, but some things do come natural to me and I like to keep it simple to share with others. First of all, if you have access to a graphic editing tool like Photoshop, gimp, Pixlr, there are tons of other graphic editing tools to use. The one I like to use is Pixlr, because it’s a simple graphic software tool and I like the fact that I don’t have to download the software to my computer. I only save the photo images I create onto my computer.
Just a side note: Remember your images need a host and it may have to be stored on your own computer or in your WordPress file, so don’t delete the saved photo files you may delete your images from where you’re displaying it at.
I have to say, I was apprehensive at first not sure where to start with my fanpage timeline updates, so I decided to start with my photo image brands. Yes.. I said Brands! With the new changes landing pages will no longer be the first thing you see but a cover photo image will take the place of a landing page to get the viewers attention. So be creative with your cover photo image and stay within the guidelines with what facebook request of us, and it keeps them off your back.
Okay, let’s get down to business.
- Cover Photo Layout Image: 851 x 315 Pixels
- Profile Picture Image Thumbnail: 180 x 180 pixels (fb will make any further image adjustments)
- Apps Icon Image: 111 x 74 pixels

Thanks for your great tutorial on creating a Timeline cover. I am in the process of changing my fan page and learning all the new features of the layout. I’m also learning about applications since we have more room to use them. Facebook has some guidelines as you mentioned for your Timeline cover and I would like to post it so marketers know what is allowed and not allowed. I had my blog address on my first one and found out that Facebook does not want contact information on the cover. Of course I had to start doing a little research and this is from their guidelines:
How should I choose a cover photo for my Page?
Use a unique image that represents your Page. This might be a photo of a popular menu item, album artwork or a picture of people using your product. Be creative and experiment with images your audience responds well to.
Cover images must be at least 399 pixels wide and may not contain:
IE.. Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”
Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section
References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”
To get the best quality image and fastest load times for your Page, upload an sRGB JPG file that’s 851 pixels wide, 315 pixels tall and less than 100 kilobytes.
All cover images are public, which means anyone visiting your Page will be able to see the image you choose. Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must not infringe on third parties’ intellectual property. You may not encourage or incentivize people to upload your cover image to their personal timelines.

Great tutorial Lani! I’m one of those people who usually sits back and waits for the dust to clear before jumping into new things like this, primarily because so much of the early chatter having to do with change usually sounds a lot like that fairy tale ‘the sky is falling, the sky is falling!’ But I’d been hoping for awhile FB would make this change to pages so I jumped in as soon as it was possible to create the new timeline. Personally, I’m happy with the new look and love how easy they’ve made it to make changes
