Make the best to be selective with spam comments by modifying it to boost your Page Rank. Of course, this is based on my experience and how I deal with comment spammers.
In most cases, I’ll give the person the benefit of the doubt and see whose linking to my blog and view what their information pertains to. It’s pertinent to be concerned! Make it a habit to see whose linking to your blog, because one can’t be too careful in what may be attached to their comments. For instance, dead or error links, adult content and malicious virus links, waiting for you or a viewer to click on it. Unfortunately we have to be cautious and alert in these matters.
Comments In My Email Inbox: Most of us, our comments from people appear in our email inbox, so it makes it easier to check what kind of comments being placed on our blog or social sites. I play it safe and I monitor what comes in and what goes out and I on purposely set my blog comments to be viewed based on my authorization before it gets displayed to the public. Don’t fight it just get even by modifying and monitoring incoming comments.
What To Expect With Irrelevant Comments
As internet marketers and bloggers, we take pride in our work and due our diligence to share valuable content with others. Spam is a continuous nag for most, but we have to deal with it and get creative. Most know about the cons, but I’ll cover more on the pros and how to turn around spam comments.
Most of it, appear in places such as blogs, social sites like Twitter, Youtube and Facebook, these sites allow contextual comments and people select an attached link to redirect you to a website, squeeze page or landing page to promote their products or services. Most of the time it contain no relevance to your content.
In effect, most online marketers try to distract spammers by setting up automated anti-spam software’s or installing a WordPress plugin or manual delete spam to deter others from imposing on your sites.
Finding Value In A Spam Comment
You might be asking yourself, what do I mean by this? Keep reading on you will see what I mean by adding value with spam comments. For the average internet marketer’s we know comments creates back links and increases PR rating on your site. So there are great benefits to comments! Extract from high quality sites, I may add.

See Illustration below….

Test The Links: When you adjust the url address link, at times to the home page you may get a higher PR, off of their irrelevant comment. Of course, you may want to use this with spammers content only and be selective, most I had to trash.

I am listing some basic methods I used to update my spam comments to benefit my site. This is what I did. You will be surprised how many stagnant comments you have active on your page and posts. Read on…
- Clear out any unwanted comments from dead links or expired domain urls
- Comment(s) attached with virus links.
- In appropriate site links such as adult, squeeze page, and landing pages.
- Irrelevant content with low PR ratings, ie.. eCommerce sites with products and services offers and lengthy address url(s).
- Delete repetitive content usage on each page or posts.
- Disguised IP addresses with same website link.
Adding a positive twist on your site and taking control of it can be beneficial to your blog. As I have noted here. Try it… you may add some value to your own site with a few comment modifying. Remember this is your turf and not theirs. They ought to appreciate it that you kept the comment.
Comment Tools I Use: I continue to use Firefox, and they have this awesome add-on tool called SEO Quake. This tool detects Page Rank ratings on websites and social sites through the address url link. It may not always be accurate or the best but it’s better than nothing. I’m sure there are other software tools out there. For now I’m content using this tool.
Also, for those who have been working online for awhile we can identify who the spammers are. Spammers avoid branding tools such as Gravatar. I believe those who are branding themselves are transparent in every way, even as simple as commenting. So there you go nothing to fancy, but just creative fundamental experiments to enhance your business without the fuss.
If this has been a helpful tip don’t be afraid to leave me a relevant non-spam comment and share this with others with a Like and Tweet! {Also, share your creative methods in how you turned around your spam comments to help your site.}

Changing the URL in a spam comment is NOT going to give you a higher Page Rank. Page Rank works the opposite way… When you approve a comment on your blog, you are in fact creating a link FROM your blog TO the spammer’s blog.
That will NOT pass the spammer’s Page Rank back to you. If anything, it will pass YOUR Page Rank on to the spammer! The exact opposite of what you’re really trying to do here.
You do NOT get Page Rank by providing links TO other sites… you get Page Rank by having other sites link to YOU.

Hi, I am new at blogging, and have only just started receiving spammy comments. (BTW I found your page by googling “Do spam comments on my blog increase SEO”). I like your idea about checking out the links first to make sure they’re not expired, etc. My question is, if the links have a virus attached to them, and I click on them, won’t I catch the virus? How can I check links are legit without being exposed to any risk?
@Jules, I appreciate you stopping by and good questions. I have an anti-virus called Norton on my computer, so if I click on a virus link it immediately catches it. I guess this is another project to look into, but as of yet I can’t say if you will click on a bad link. Mahalo, Lani

Lani – Fundamental Online Methods recently posted..Modifiy Spam Comments To Increase Your Page Rank
I don’t think the links in comment section could improve PR anymore, especially after recent Google Penguin update. Google is counting just comments in the content area at the moment, so we’d better spend time on writing great content and get natural links.

Currently I am using Akismet and conditional captcha plugin. Both the plugins work well with each other.

Hi Lani,
Its truly great to see and make it useful out of spam comments. We never though more than trashing them!
I’m using ‘Spam Free WordPress’ for my blog and this plugin with trackback turned off, the spam comments are dropped to ZERO without any false positive. Truly love the plugin to waive off the moderation burden!
After reading your post, I feel if I need to turn off this plugin occasionally to get some spams?

Thanks Lani for sharing your tips on turning around our spam comments. Would this also work for the ‘trackbacks’ as well? I have been receiving hundreds of trackbacks, except 90% of them are inappropriate or not related to my site. So I am deleting a lot of them.
But I am able to ‘edit’ in my WP dashboard in my comments. So wondering if you would suggest it for trackbacks too? Really appreciate you sharing your insights on this. Page rank is important to bringing us more visibility and little tips like this is yet another way to help in that area.

@Lynn, yep just like you alter your comments in your dashboard you can do the same with trackback. Check the links if it’s worth saving and modify the title if needed. Most of my track back I trash it and not worth altering. I’m glad you came by. Mahalo, Lani

Hi Lani,
Excellent. In the past I have done something similar to what you mentioned. I have twisted those nasty comments and then approved them. However, luckily for me, now I receiving REAL comments with just about enough time to take care of those
So, the heck with the spammers.
Also, now I have commentluv which’s as you know has a very efficient anti-spammer tool. I love it.
I remember few months back there was that “female” commenting on my blog who didn’t seem to be a spammer at first, so I approved her comment. However, one day as her comments were automatically approved I notice a site promoting guns. I will never approve anyone promoting guns on any of my blogs, so I had to go back to each of her comments and trash them all. Since then, she never came back to my blog. Some spammer are very sneaky and not that obvious, so we need to keep our eyes open.
Thanks for this great post

Fascinating post.
I use the GASP anti-spam plugin that comes with commentluv premium and am happy with that at this time.
I have the Alexa Toolbar, so when I am deciding whether or not to delete a borderline comment I look at it’s alexa ranks and how many sites linking into it. I try and see whether the site is NOT shady and if it looks like it will be around several years from now so I won’t be linking to a dead link from the commentluv link on my site to theirs.
Feel free to modify borderline comments all you want cause no one is going to come back and check or care or say anything. They are just trying to get a backlink.

Hi Lani,
I recently starting use *both* Akismet and GASP plugins for spam protection and the combination of the two is amazing! I wasn’t extremely happy with either one alone, but together they work very well. I went from hundreds of comments in my spam folder to less than ten! That helps me to not even have to worry about the comments because what ends up in my spam folder is now mostly legit comments.

Greetings Lani,
I was also not checking my SPAM folder some months back, but one day I found one of my mate’s comment over there which made me to think how come his comment was flagged as SPAM as I thought only bots are identified as them. But as soon as I checked my SPAM box, there were many comments of other real visitors which had been flagged. I individually unspammed them and now I keep checking them once in 2 days
The tips were really neat and cool. Thumb Up!
